Aircel announces free Facebook access for its customers for two months
|

Aircel has announced that it will offer Facebook free of charge to all its customers in India for the next 60 days. The Facebook for All service includes all the official applications of the social networking website as well as Facebook Messenger. You can even browse through the SNS via your mobile browser without shelling out a single penny.
The main reason behind introducing this service is to increase the internet penetration amongst subscribers. Anupam Vasudev, Chief Marketing Officer, Aircel says that almost 60 percent of the carrier’s customers have data enabled on their smartphones and this step is being taken to augment data proliferation in the country.
However, there are a few limitations to it. Apparently, the SNS will be free for 2 months only for the new Aircel customers, while the existing ones will get it only for a month. Also, you get merely 50MB of free data every month and if the usage crosses this limit, you will be charged accordingly.
And if that’s not enough, Aircel has introduced Facebook-specific plans for Rs 14 and Rs 5. The former gives you 100MB with a 28-day validity, while the latter brings 25MB usage for 7 days. Facebook for All is slated to be introduced in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir and will then arrive in Aircel’s other circles.

Samsung Galaxy S5 coming to India today: Pre-orders likely to begin
|

Samsung is holding an event in Delhi today to launch the latest flagship Galaxy S5 in India. A company source told Tech2 that while the launch wold take place today, it’s unlikely that the phone will go on sale that day.
What’s possible is that Samsung will kick-off pre-orders for the S5, along with some introductory discounts, and operator and services tie-ups specific to India.
The company is already bundling in a bunch of apps with the phone. As was announced during the Samsung Unpacked 5 event last month, the company will start selling the phone from April 11, and this has been confirmed by the pricing details that have been released for the US.
As of now, there’s no word on whether Samsung will be also launching the Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo, Gear Fit and the S Band wearables along side the new flagship.
We know nearly everything there is to know about the Galaxy S5, without seeing the phone first hand. Samsung is betting big on the fitness feature and the heart rate monitor on the phone will get a lot of airtime in the promotions. It’s the first phone to feature such a dedicated sensor.
In addition, Samsung has also made the S5 waterproof, which has seemingly added a bit of bulk to the handset, forcing the bezels around the display to be slightly bigger than one would expect. Another USP is the fingerprint scanner on the home button, which will let you sign in to many services with just a swipe. We are yet to see how this works in real-world usage and whether it can go toe-to-toe with the iPhone fingerprint scanner.
In terms of design, you will not see much difference between the departing flagship the Galaxy S4 and the S5. While they both have a very similar general profile, the biggest and most noticeable change is on the back, where a dimpled polycarbonate exterior takes the place of the glossy panel on the previous flagship.

India's 3G data use skyrockets
|

Rising smartphones and mobile data price war by telecom companies have pushed 3G data consumption to record levels in the country.
Growth in 3G data traffic in the country surpassed the world average for 2013 with the country showing 87 per cent rise in the overall data traffic from both 2G and 3G services during 2013, of which 3G alone accounted for 43 per cent.
While 3G data traffic leapt by 146 per cent in 2013, 2G data traffic growth was stable at 59 per cent during the period, revealed MBit Index study, an annual report on mobile broadband performance in India by Nokia Solutions and Networks.
In some key urban centers, the average data consumption per user was as high as one gigabyte (GB) per month, indicating the rising popularity and the surge of 3G use across India.
In addition, premium tariff reductions in 3G services in early 2013 led to an increased migration of high end 2G customers to 3G, the report said.
Clearly pointing out the trend of higher average data consumption of 3G users than their 2G counterparts, the index showed that in December 2013 alone, a 3G user consumed 532 megabyte of data compared to 146 megabyte of data consumption by 2G users.
Among the highest contributor of 3G in India are cities under category A telecom circle which showed a remarkable increase in 3G mobile data consumption of 185 per cent in 2013.
“India is recording mobile broadband data growth figures higher than most other markets,” said Sandeep Girotra, head of India region at NSN.
This trend is in line with NSN’s Technology Vision 2020 that called for readying profitable mo-bile networks to deliver one gigabyte of personalized data per user per day by 2020, he added.
“With the recent spectrum auctions paving the way for acceleration of mobile broadband penetration in the country, there is a great opportunity for India to create a world-class infrastructure and improve the lives of millions of Indians,” he explained, calling for a wider 3G rollout, introduction of LTE technologies and modernization of the existing GSM networks.

Forged Isro and Mars Orbiter Mission social media pages continue to be a hit

In the run up to one of its most ambitious projects, Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) in November 2014 had entered the social media space by launching its official Facebook page and Twitter account.
Its Facebook page and Twitter account soon became a hit. Cashing in on the immense popularity of Isro's Facebook page and Twitter account a number of pages in the social media were floated in the name of ISRO, Department of Space and Mangalyaan.Isro after getting to know that impersonation of the organisation was taking place had cautioned users to about those accounts and stated that they have no authenticity and that it is not responsible for any content hosted by these pages.
Further it had also said on December 16 last year that stern legal actions against these pages and its administrators will be initiated which led the closure of most accountsHowever many social media users still prefer them and continue to tweet and tag those twitter account handles while congratulating the organisation when it achieves a land mark or when it makes an announcement.
One of the twitter accounts @Mangalyaan1 continues to be mentioned in many tweets whenever there is an update on the MOM.When the MOM completed 100 days many congratulated @ Mangalyaan1 thinking it is the official twitter handle of space agency among them was the US Consulate Chennai.Similarly when Isro successfully launched the indigenous GSLV D-5 former Jharkhand Chief Minister Arjun Munda congratulated @ISRO_India another forged account.
Another @ISROBhuvan though no longer in use continues to be mentioned on twitter and questions are also posed to it regularly. While one of the two Facebook pages which Isro said were forged is blocked another one gives regular updates. With about 394,468 likes this Facebook page states it unofficial.

New gadgets hope to hush Mumbai's incessant honking
|

A handful of fed-up residents in one of the world's noisiest cities have taken on a daunting challenge: persuading Indian drivers to stop honking their car horns.
Non-stop beeping has become the dominant soundtrack to Mumbai as clattering rickshaws, public buses, clapped-out taxis, weaving motorbikes and private cars fight for space on the traffic-clogged roads.
Now two separate teams in the city have come up with devices aimed at instilling some peace: one by forcing overzealous horn-users to open their wallets, and another by simply attacking drivers' consciences.
"People blow their horns just for no sake," said Jayraj Salgaonkar, who with a group of engineers has developed the 'Oren horn usage meter' (the name 'Oren' derives from local pronunciation of the word 'horn').
The meter does not prevent the horn from working but instead allows for a limited amount of honking, after which it causes the vehicle's tail-lights to flash and alert the traffic police, who could then issue a fine.
The driver gets green, amber and red-light warnings over his honk allowance and can top up his meter "like a pre-paid phone card", said Salgaonkar. He is in talks with local authorities to get the device mandated city-wide.
"I have invested money and time and emotion," he told AFP, relating his years of exasperation with the city's cacophony.
"People take pride in honking their horn. There's an ego trip over having a car. Until you make people pay for their usage of the horn, it's not going to work," said the publisher turned honk activist, who is hoping that the potential revenues brought by the system will help persuade authorities to adopt it.
The second invention, also vying for official sanction, less publicly castigates the honkers.

Tips to make your browser secure
|
|

MUNICH: Web browsers are the key to the internet. Without them the internet is an impenetrable black box.
Browsers may be among the most commonly used applications, but they also offer the greatest number of attack options for dangerous content on the net.To keep viruses, worms and other malware away from your computer when surfing,it's crucial to configure your browser for security.
The firewall on a DSL router is a good first step for protecting the computer during surfing, says Marco Rinne from the computer portal chip.de. But that doesn't hold true if your browser is out of date: “Internet Explorer 6 and 7 or Firefox 2 no longer satisfy current security standards,” he says. For optimal protection, he therefore urgesusers to keep theirbrowsers updated.
There are numeroussecurity tools already present in Firefox and Internet Explorer. The pop-up blocker, for example, prevents more than justannoying ads. It alsothrottles other windows that can be used to sneak malicious software onto PCs. Phishing filters protect personal dataagainst theft.
Firefox offers additional configurationoptions underthe Settings item in the Security tab of the Options dialog box: thisincludes the ability to block risky or forgedwebsites. It's also a good idea to prohibit websites from installing add-ons on their own. Similar settings are possible under Internet Explorer in the Security tab of the Internet Options dialog box, accessible from the Tools menu.
