US Poll: Americans still seek serious news on media buffet

A new study finds Americans of all ages are charting their own paths across a media landscape that no longer relies on front pages and evening newscasts to dictate what's worth knowing. They still pay heed to serious news even as they seek out the lighter stuff, according to the Media Insight Project. The conclusions burst the myth of the media 'bubble' -- the notion that no one pays attention to anything beyond a limited sphere of interest. Three-fourths of Americans see or hear news daily, including 6 of 10 adults under age 30, the study found. Nearly everyone -- about 9 in 10 people -- said they enjoy keeping up with the news.

Narendra Modi or Rahul Gandhi, here is what United States wants from the new Indian PM

As India gears up to elect its new Prime Minister, with two contenders slugging it out in the Lok Sabha Elections in the form of BJP PM candidate Narendra Modi and Congress scion Rahul Gandhi, the United States-India Business Council has come out with a comprehensive wish list, which if implemented, would help in achieving the goal of a bilateral trade of USD 500 billion per year.

The comprehensive action plan among other things includes a demand to resolve the outstanding issues related to the civil nuclear deal, to increase foreign direct investment in the defence sector, e-commerce and insurance and to encourage a level-playing field to global companies in financial sector.

The USIBC calls for legislation and implementation of the plan that provides certainty in India's international tax treaties and investment structures.

Reiterating its call to opening of India's multi-brand retail sector to support closer linkages between farmers and markets, the USIBC said it would advocate for a fair, transparent and streamlined bidding process in the infrastructure sector.

"Derived from USIBC's 300 member-companies, both Indian and American, including 250 of the largest US companies investing in India, this 'Way Forward Agenda 2014-2015' presents the many issues we all need to focus on to deepen the two-way partnership between our dynamic commercial sectors," USIBC president Ron Somers said.

The listing is comprehensive, but is also intended to be calibrated as constructive progress is achieved, he said.

"The facts are that as two-way trade between our economies deepens (now at USD 100 billion, setting a 'stretch-goal of achieving USD 500 billion before the decade is out), the issues are becoming more granular and complex...but now enjoy a momentum destined to deepen collaboration. That's the exciting narrative of the US-India growth story," Somers said.

Increasing foreign direct investment cap from 26 per cent to 74 per cent would spur greater investment and technology transfer by American defence companies, which would increase opportunities for coproduction, joint manufacturing, and industrial partnerships with Indian industry, the USIBC said.

It also urges India to sign long-pending "enabler agreements" and support India's membership in the multilateral export control regimes to enable a more advanced and robust bilateral defence trade relationship.

Urging the government abolition of the "5 year, 20 aircraft rule," to allow low cost carriers and newly formed alliances to take flight and enhance regional competitiveness, it also calls for reducing the general-aviation access clearance time to one to two days and roll back of the duty on the import of private aircraft, as this has significantly stunted growth in the GA/NSOP sector and has hindered the growth of aeronautical infrastructure.

In its document, running into 40 pages, USIBC said this year it would work with the Indian government to ensure successful alignment with industry best practices when implementing the Compulsory Registration Order or the safety testing, registration, and labelling requirements.

"We will also continue to seek exemptions for highly specialised equipment and R&D products with low commercial value. Also, we will continue to seek flexibility on the labelling requirements from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) while urging GOI to ensure proper coordination between all branches of the government (i.e., customs and BIS) to ensure accountability and mitigate supply chain disruptions for USIBC companies," it said.

Jindal Steel and Power Ltd to stop buying metallurgical coal from Australia in 3 months

NEW DELHI: Jindal Steel and Power Ltd will stop buying coking coal from Australia in three months from now as its own mines there start shipping, a top company official said, a move that could further soften prices of the commodity.

Recent coking, or metallurgical, coal price settlements by major miners showed a fall in the price of all coal types for the first quarter of 2014, underscoring a weak demand outlook from steelmakers in Asia.

"We get 50,000 tonnes per month from our mine in Mozambique and another 50,000 tonnes we buy from Australia," said VR Sharma, deputy managing director of Jindal Steel.

"But after three months we will not be buying because we have our own mines there," he told Reuters late on Tuesday.

Jindal Steel, headed by billionaire lawmaker Naveen Jindal, got access to 650 million tonnes of coking coal resources in October after buying a majority stake in Gujarat NRE Coking Coal , the Australian unit of Gujarat NRE Coke Ltd.

Gujarat NRE Coking's two mines, located in New South Wales, are currently producing 1.5 million tonnes per year and are expected to have an output of 5 million tonnes by 2016.

Australia is the world's largest coking coal exporter, with shipments expected to rise 6 percent to 163.9 million tonnes this fiscal year ending March 31.

Sharma said Jindal Steel's coking coal consumption will more than double to 2.6 million tonnes by 2016 as it expands capacity. About 80 percent of the coal will come from its mines abroad and the rest it will buy from the open market.

But unlike other Indian companies such as Steel Authority of India Ltd and Neyveli Lignite Corp, Sharma said Jindal Steel was no longer looking to buy coal mines overseas as it has enough coking coal resources now.

India's coking coal imports are set to rise 6 percent to 35 million tonnes this fiscal year ending March 31. Domestic output has been stagnant at 18 million tonnes per year as most reserves are in thickly populated areas.

Still not motivated enough? Here's a list of some important fitness facts for women that will help you to get moving.

Avoid obesity: With the dangerous bulging obesity ratios in India, recent statistics revealed that almost one in six women in the country are overweight and are in dire need to trim for avoiding health hazards associated with obesity. This is due to the increased adoption of sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy eating habits.

30 minutes a day: Your fitness level can be improved by merely adding a few minutes of movement into your daily routine. According to fitness experts; just 30 minute workout for 5 days a week is sufficient to overcome the adverse effects of inactivity and sedentary lifestyle.

You can also incorporate minor changes in your daily lifestyle like taking the stairs instead of the lift, parking the car in the last row of the parking lot and walking briskly for a few minutes between your parked car and your office.

The importance of de-stressing: Women are more prone to stress and pressure as compared to men and this, in turn, leads to various health issues. Work on basic relaxation and breathing techniques whenever you can - even while performing your regular chores.

Muscle and joint pain: Be careful not to neglect any kind of muscle tightness or joint pains as everything in your body are interlinked with each other. Overlooking such fitness factors may affect the proper functioning of other body joints and muscles as well. Hence, ensure that you address such issues at the earliest.

Cardio and weight training: The ideal fitness program for women should include exercises that increase their muscle tone and elevate their heart rate. A continuous, repetitive aerobic workout plan that affects all the large muscle groups in their body is the best option, when coupled with adequate strength training to retain and develop bone density.

Indian Medical Association lectures to help students, doctors tackle stress

KANPUR: The Indian Medical Association here has launched a series of lectures by experts to help students and junior doctors cope with psychological pressure, a knock-on effect of their recent face-off with the police.

"Students are in depression after the recent fiasco. Mental balance is imperative as they have to deal with people on a daily basis. Therefore, a lecture series is being organised to help them cope with stress," IMA (Kanpur) president, Aarti Lal Chandani said.

This open-for-all lecture series will be delivered by psychologists, psychiatrists and management gurus to help students overcome mental pressure and return to normalcy.

The series, which includes lectures on behaviour therapy, psychotherapy, management relationship, public relations and media relationship, will help them deal with people, said Lal.

The hour-long classes are scheduled to continue till March 31.

Recently, doctors and teachers of medical colleges here went on strike to protest police action on 24 junior doctors and their subsequent arrest.

Students of Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Medical (GSVM) college were allegedly beaten up by Kanpur police and supporters of SP MLA Irfan Solanki on February 28 following an altercation with him.

Counselling sessions are also being provided to the 24 junior doctors who were arrested in connection with the clash and were sent to jail, she said.

Ronaldo double seals Madrid's place in last eight

MADRID: Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Real Madrid cruised into the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a 9-2 aggregate victory over Schalke thanks to a 3-1 win at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday.

However, victory came at a cost for Los Blancos as promising forward Jese Rodriguez suffered a suspected cruciate ligament injury early on in the game.

Ronaldo put Real ahead on the night when he swept home Gareth Bale's low cross on 21 minutes, but Tim Hoogland's deflected effort brought the visitors level before half-time.

It took until 16 minutes from time for Ronaldo to put Madrid back in front as he collected a loose ball from Bale and stormed forward to drill low into the net for his 13th Champions League goal of the season.

And Bale was the creator once more for his side's third moments later when he squared for Alvaro Morata to fire home after Ronaldo had struck the bar.

Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti had named a weakened side with one eye on Sunday's crucial La Liga clash against Barcelona.

However, the Italian was forced to introduce Bale inside the first 10 minutes when Jese had to be stretchered off after appearing to suffer a serious knee injury as he challenged for the ball with Sead Kolasinac on the right.

Bale replaced the Spanish under-21 international and injected plenty of pace into Madrid's play for the rest of the half.

The Welshman teed up Ronaldo for the opener as he received Morata's pass and squared for the Portuguese to tap into an empty net.

Morata should have doubled his side's advantage six minutes later after a wonderful run and cross by Bale, but he skewed horribly wide with just Ralf Fahrmann to beat.

Against the run of play, Schalke were back on level terms just after the half hour mark when Hoogland wandered forward from right-back and saw his shot deflect off Sergio Ramos and past the flat-footed Iker Casillas.

Fahrmann then made a hat-trick of saves to keep his side from going in behind at the break as he denied Isco, Morata and Nacho.

And the Bundesliga side could even have been in front at the break as former Real striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar slotted the ball inches past the far post from Max Meyer's through ball.

Fahrmann was a busy man in the second period too as he made a fantastic save to turn a Ronaldo header over before denying Isco from close range.

Ronaldo did finally put the hosts back in front as he drove at the Schalke defence before firing low past the helpless Fahrmann.

And Morata got the confidence boast he needed two minutes later when Bale unselfishly squared after Ronaldo had struck the bar.

Ronaldo came within inches of his hat-trick and equalling Lionel Messi's record of 14 Champions League goals in a season again seven minutes from time, but he had to settle for just a double on the night as his low left-footed effort came back off the post and rebounded to safety.

INSPIRING STORY "

  Keep your dream

I have a friend named Monty Roberts who owns a horse ranch in San Ysidro. He has let me use his house to put on fund-raising events to raise money for youth at risk programs.

The last time I was there he introduced me by saying, “I want to tell you why I let Jack use my horse. It all goes back to a story about a young man who was the son of an itinerant horse trainer who would go from stable to stable, race track to race track, farm to farm and ranch to ranch, training horses.

As a result, the boy’s high school career was continually interrupted. When he was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up.

“That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the location of all the buildings, the stables and the track.

Then he drew a detailed floor plan for a 4,000-square-foot house that would sit on a 200-acre dream ranch.

“He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. On the front page was a large red F with a note that read, `See me after class.’

“The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked, `Why did I receive an F?’

“The teacher said, `This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you. You have no money. You come from an itinerant family.

You have no resources. Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. You have to buy the land. You have to pay for the original breeding stock and later you’ll have to pay large stud fees. There’s no way you could ever do it.’

Then the teacher added, `If you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will reconsider your grade.’

“The boy went home and thought about it long and hard. He asked his father what he should do. His father said, `Look, son, you have to make up your own mind on this.

However, I think it is a very important decision for you.’ “Finally, after sitting with it for a week, the boy turned in the same paper, making no changes at all. He stated, “You can keep the F and I’ll keep my dream.”

Monty then turned to the assembled group and said, “I tell you this story because you are sitting in my 4,000-square-foot house in the middle of my 200-acre horse ranch.

I still have that school paper framed over the fireplace.” He added, “The best part of the story is that two summers ago that same schoolteacher brought 30 kids to camp out on my ranch for a week.” When the teacher was leaving, he said, “Look, Monty, I can tell you this now.

When I was your teacher, I was something of a dream stealer. During those years I stole a lot of kids’ dreams. Fortunately you had enough gumption not to give up on yours.”

“Don’t let anyone steal your dreams. Follow your heart, no matter what.”

“We can win life by all means if we simply avoid two things in our lives.“Comparing with others” and “Expecting from others.” ”
