Dry bars - is England sobering up?

Alcohol is omnipresent,' says Catherine Salway. 'You can't even go to the cinema now without considering having a glass of wine. But I thought: 'There's a way to cut through that, and do the opposite.'' Salway is the founder of a new 'gastrobar' called Redemption, located in west London. The food is 'pretty much' vegan, but what really sets the place apart is a completely alcohol-free drinks menu. The basic idea, Salway says, is to offer people a chance to 'spoil yourself without spoiling yourself'. Her business is on the crest of a wave -- as evidenced by a handful of similar projects in other British towns and cities, and statistics that suggest Britain's national dependence on the bottle may at last be starting to wane, not least among people under 30.

'No FIR for now in Sunanda Pushkar case, inquest to continue'

Delhi Police chief B S Bassi said inquest would continue in the mysterious death of Sunanda Pushkar, Union Minister Shashi Tharoor's wife while maintaining that there is "no reason" to proceed in any other way, virtually ruling out an FIR in the case as of now.

"From the circumstantial evidence collected so far and from the statement of witnesses, there is no reason for us to proceed in any other fashion so we are carrying on our inquiries under Section 174 CrPC," the police commissioner told reporters here.

Inquest proceedings under Section 174 CrPC were initiated in the Sunanda case according to which a Sub-divisional Magistrate inquires into the death of a woman if she dies within seven years of her marriage.

In this case, on January 21, a sub-divisional magistrate had directed Delhi Police to investigate the murder or suicide angle in the case after autopsy report has cited the death as "sudden and unnatural" while the cause of death was mentioned as poisoning.

The police can file an FIR in this case if it finds any foul play but until then the inquiry will go on under section 174 CrPC.

Investigators were banking on the viscera report from CFSL to get definitive lead on the nature of the poison and establishing its quantity but the report has failed to do so. The viscera report hints toward drug poisoning and its findings are still inconclusive to file an FIR in the case, according to police.

"The CFSL report has not been able to give much headway into the probe. It rules out poisoning and hints toward drug poisoning," said a senior police official associated with the probe.

Investigators will now take the opinion from the panel of doctors from AIIMS which had carried out an autopsy to shed light into findings of the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) report.

The SDM has also been informed about the CFSL report.

Sunanda, 52, was found dead in a 5-star hotel in South Delhi on the night of January 17, a day after her twitter spat with Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar over an alleged affair with Tharoor.

Catch-up game: BSE mid-cap index trails bigger peers

The BSE mid-cap index, which rallied in tandem with the benchmark indices in 2007 to touch an all-time high, has under-performed over the last 18 months as projected earnings growth at the start of FY14 was much lower when calculated on an annualised basis. The projected earnings growth for the BSE mid-cap index in April 2013 was over 25%, which has now been lowered down to 16per cent. Though the benchmark indices are trading at an all-time high, the BSE mid-cap is trading 33per cent away from the lifetime peak it scaled in 2007.

Over the last one year, the BSE mid-cap index has been under-performing the Nifty as most of its constituents have witnessed a gradual downward revision in earnings. The majority of constituents or companies which constitute the BSE mid-cap index have seen a downward revision, as most brokerages had pinned hopes of a recovery in growth from the third quarter of FY14. The brokerages have built in a profit contribution of over 55-60per cent in the second half of FY14, but with little changes in the macro environment and muted demand, they were bound to revise their earnings downward.

According to Bloomberg, the mid-cap index EPS for FY14 has fallen by 20per cent to 485 since September last year. On the other hand, the Nifty's EPS for FY14 has been upgraded by 9per cent to 452 during the same period. Of the 216 constituents of the BSE mid-cap, only 32 stocks have seen an upward revision of EPS since September 2013.

On the valuation front, the BSE Mid-cap Index is trading at a lower valuation compared with the Nifty. The difference of P/E (price-earning) multiple of two indices, which is known as PE spread shows the amount of premium or discount an investor is willing to pay to buy for a higher risk mid-cap stock.

If the PE spread is lower than the historical average, it indicates that investors are not overtly bullish about the mid-cap stocks compared to benchmark indices with limited prospects for a build-up in the stock. In 2007, on a historical basis, the BSE mid-cap PE (price-earnings) was trading at a premium valuation to the Nifty. The BSE Mid-cap was trading at 23 times in November 2007 when the Nifty traded at 21 times.

Among the constituents of the BSE Midcap, companies whose EPS has been revised upwards, have seen a significant gain since the start of the year. Even the interest of institutional investors such as foreign institutional investors and also mutual funds had been largely concentrated on companies of the BSE midcap constituents where they perceive a fair amount of revenue visibility and see an upward revision in EPS. That is why midcap stocks that rallied recently were the ones whose EPS were upgraded by analysts.

Aurobindo Pharma, Eicher MotorsBSE 1.54 %, Bharat ForgeBSE 4.46 % and IPCABSE -0.57 % have seen a consistent increase in FII holding during the last three quarters.

9 natural detoxifying foods

Press instant restart on your system by signing up for a detoxification program designed by nature

Turmeric
While recent studies have hailed its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects on the body, Ayurveda has valued this spice for centuries for its staggering medicinal properties. What makes it relevant for those wishing to detox is its power to help the liver get rid of harmful compounds. Since the primary purpose of a detoxification exercise is to support the organs of elimination like liver, turmeric comes to the rescue and its antioxidants play a critical role in combating the cell damage that can stack up with age. So, a tablespoon of turmeric a day, is enough to considerably set your insides right.

Apples
Packed with fibre, and especially pectin which helps in cleansing the intestinal tract, apples can clear it of accumulated toxins and undigested food particles. This assumes more significance considering how essential it is to include a variety of fibres in the diet to maximise detoxification.

Garlic
Garlic's high sulphur content not only tones the skin and makes your hair more lustrous, it also fires up the detoxification process. The liver must neutralise toxins with sulphur until it is excreted in a process called sulfation. To smoothen this proc- ess, include more sulphurrich foods like garlic in your diet. Three cloves per meal should do you good.

Lemons
Never miss a chance to add some fresh lemon juice to the water you drink or the food you eat. Lemon gets a lot of credit for warding off the cold, but its ability to aid healthy digestion and elimination is often overlooked. It may be the lemon's tart taste that encourages bile flow which helps digestion. Even its peels are rich in antioxidants that support detoxification.

Flaxseeds
Fibre-powered flaxseeds can help keep many diseases at bay and its mix of nutrients helps internal cleansing. Since flaxseeds contain both soluble and insoluble fibre, they facilitate smooth bowel movement and prevent the re-absorption of cholesterol from the colon. Sprinkle a few tablespoons into your morning smoothie or salad.

Ruthless Rafael Nadal continues Miami rampage

MIAMI: World number one Rafael Nadal continued his ruthless rampage through the Sony Open on Monday, crushing Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin 6-1, 6-0 to reach the fourth round at Crandon Park.

Also through to the next round is Australian Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka, who looked sharp in a no-nonsense 7-5, 6-4 win over Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin.

Nadal, who has reached the final three times but never lifted the Miami title, blew past Lleyton Hewitt in the second round before overwhelming Istomin in less than an hour in a centre court master class.

Next up for the Spaniard is a fourth round meeting on Tuesday with Italian 14th seed Fabio Fognini, who advanced with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 comeback win over Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut.

Further down the road is a possible semifinal meeting with third seed Wawrinka, who beat the Spaniard in the final of the Australian Open to claim his first grand slam title.

Nadal has shown no signs of losing focus, however, and broke Istomin twice to open the match and grab a 4-0 lead.

The 57th ranked Istomin finally held serve at 4-1 but that would be the only time as Nadal thundered through the next eight game to complete the rout.

"I played a very complete match," said Nadal, who was given a warning for slow play. "No match is perfect but I did a lot of things very well. No mistakes, serving with good percentage, and playing a lot of winners.

"My movements were better than what I did last event events. That's a very important thing for me."

Wawrinka, who has admitted to suffering something of a grand slam hangover, has already matched his best effort in six visits to Miami. His win set up a last 16 meeting with Ukraine's Alexander Dolgopolov, a 3-6, 6-0, 7-6(5) winner over Serb Dusan Lajovic.

"Just doing my job. Simple," said Wawrinka. "My job is to play tennis, try to play the best possible, and to do that I have to practice well.

"People are expecting more from me but from myself it's the same. The pressure is same. I always put a lot of pressure on myself and always want to win matches and play well."

Canadian 12th seed Milos Raonic blasted his way into the fourth round with 6-1, 6-2 win over Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in 56 minutes.

Raonic, who exited the Miami tournament in the third round with injuries the last two years, has had no fitness concerns this year, firing 10 aces and surrendering just five points on his serve to Garcia-Lopez.

INSPIRING STORY "

  Keep your dream

I have a friend named Monty Roberts who owns a horse ranch in San Ysidro. He has let me use his house to put on fund-raising events to raise money for youth at risk programs.

The last time I was there he introduced me by saying, “I want to tell you why I let Jack use my horse. It all goes back to a story about a young man who was the son of an itinerant horse trainer who would go from stable to stable, race track to race track, farm to farm and ranch to ranch, training horses.

As a result, the boy’s high school career was continually interrupted. When he was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up.

“That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the location of all the buildings, the stables and the track.

Then he drew a detailed floor plan for a 4,000-square-foot house that would sit on a 200-acre dream ranch.“He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he handed it in to his teacher.

Two days later he received his paper back. On the front page was a large red F with a note that read, `See me after class.’ “The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked, `Why did I receive an F?’

“The teacher said, `This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you. You have no money. You come from an itinerant family. You have no resources. Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money.

You have to buy the land. You have to pay for the original breeding stock and later you’ll have to pay large stud fees. There’s no way you could ever do it.’ Then the teacher added, `If you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will reconsider your grade.’

“The boy went home and thought about it long and hard. He asked his father what he should do. His father said, `Look, son, you have to make up your own mind on this.

However, I think it is a very important decision for you.’ “Finally, after sitting with it for a week, the boy turned in the same paper, making no changes at all. He stated, “You can keep the F and I’ll keep my dream.”

Monty then turned to the assembled group and said, “I tell you this story because you are sitting in my 4,000-square-foot house in the middle of my 200-acre horse ranch. I still have that school paper framed over the fireplace.” He added, “The best part of the story is that two summers ago that same schoolteacher brought 30 kids to camp out on my ranch for a week.”

When the teacher was leaving, he said, “Look, Monty, I can tell you this now. When I was your teacher, I was something of a dream stealer. During those years I stole a lot of kids’ dreams. Fortunately you had enough gumption not to give up on yours.”

“Don’t let anyone steal your dreams. Follow your heart, no matter what.”
