Microsoft delivers Office for rival Apple's iPad
|

Microsoft unveiled a version of its popular Office software suite for iPad tablets Thursday as the company's new chief moved to expand its "Internet cloud" footprint.
Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella laid out a vision of making the company the master of programs and services offered in the cloud for whatever gadgets people prefer.
The US technology titan underscored that goal with the release of Office software tailored for iPads made by longtime rival Apple.
"Today is the first step on a journey to make this a great innovation vector for all of Microsoft," Nadella said in his first press briefing since taking the helm of the company.
"We are committed to making our applications run cross-platform."
The news comes with Microsoft's Surface having only limited impact in the fast-growing tablet market led by Apple and its iPad.
Nadella said he wants to provide full-feature versions of its widely used programs available for all types of devices as one aspect of Microsoft's overall strategy under his watch.
He was adamant that the company is committed to Windows operating systems for powering computers and promised more along those lines would be revealed at Microsoft's "build" conference for developers next week in San Francisco.

Facebook to use drones to beam internet from the sky: Mark Zuckerberg
|

It is no secret that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg wants to see the whole humanity connected to the web. Unfortunately internet connections are just not available in many places. But Zuckerberg believes he has a solution for this pesky problem. On Thursday, he announced that Internet.org, an organisation that Facebook started in partnership with a few other technology companies, is experimenting with drones that are capable of beaming internet in an area from the sky.
"In our effort to connect the whole world with Internet.org, we've been working on ways to beam internet to people from the sky," Zuckerberg wrote on Facebook.
"Our team has many of the world's leading experts in aerospace and communications technology, including from NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab and Ames Research Center. Today we are also bringing on key members of the team from Ascenta, a small UK-based company whose founders created early versions of Zephyr, which became the world's longest flying solar-powered unmanned aircraft. They will join our team working on connectivity aircraft."
Internet.org was launched last year with an aim to bring down the cost of internet connectivity across the world so that more people can connect to the web and utilise web services. Last month at Mobile World Congress, Zuckerberg revealed that Internet.org was working with several telecom operators across the world to reduce the cost of internet connectivity.
Facebook on Thursday revealed that the team exploring various methods to beam internet from sky is part of Connectivity Lab, a new department within Internet.org. It is exploring various options. A solar-powered drone is one option.
"For suburban areas in limited geographical regions, we've been working on solar-powered high altitude, long endurance aircraft that can stay aloft for months, be quickly deployed and deliver reliable internet connections," Internet.org noted in a statement posted on its website. "For lower density areas, low-Earth orbit and geosynchronous satellites can beam internet access to the ground."
In both cases, the internet connection will be beamed through free-space optical communication, which makes use of "light to transmit data through space using invisible, infrared laser beams".
"Free-space optical communication is a promising technology that potentially allows us to dramatically boost the speed of internet connections provided by satellites and drones," noted Internet.org.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella signals new course with MS Office for iPad
|

Microsoft Corp's new Chief Executive Officer, Satya Nadella, finally unveiled Office for Apple Inc's iPad in a polished debut that set him apart from his energetic predecessor while signaling his plans to make mobile apps the top priority at the world's largest software company.
At a news conference Thursday, executives demonstrated a new "touch-first" version of Office crafted for the iPad, available for download as a free app, though a subscription is needed to let users create or edit documents rather than just read them.
Significantly, they did not demonstrate any software on Windows machines, telegraphing a departure from former Chief Executive Steve Ballmer's focus on the personal computer operating software and its own devices.
"Their absence speaks volumes," said Daniel Ives, an analyst at FBR Capital Markets. "Nadella's a cloud-centric guy; he's going to focus on what's been successful, and where the future's going. Windows 8 thus far has been extremely underwhelming."
Nadella kicked off the presentation with a fluid, low-key introduction to Microsoft's approach to the new mobile, cloud-centric world of computing, in his first public appearance since taking the helm 52 days ago.
Dressed in a black polo shirt and dark jeans, the 46-year-old computer scientist threw in some geek humor and lines of poetry from T.S. Eliot, marking a change in style from his energetic predecessor Steve Ballmer. His lack of references to Windows indicated a deeper strategic shift.
Nadella gave no indication of when Microsoft would release "touch-first" versions of Office apps for Windows 8, the latest version of the operating software, which he acknowledged had fallen behind in the mobile era.

Google fined for not cooperating with India's antitrust agency

Google has been fined about US$166,000 by India's antitrust agency for not providing information and documents required in an investigation.
The inquiry into Google dates back to 2012 and is focused on allegations of Google's abuse of market power in online search and search advertising.
The Competition Commission of India said Thursday it had also directed Google to cooperate in the investigations by furnishing other information or documents its director general may call for.
It said it had passed the order in the context of, among other things, "non-cooperation by Google in the pending investigations."
Consumer watchdog group Consumer Unity & Trust Society (CUTS) International approached the CCI, which has quasi-legal authority, to investigate the potential misuse by Google of its dominant position in online search and search-related advertising markets.
CUTS had submitted its "preliminary information report" to the CCI following the investigations into the practices of the Internet giant by the European Commission and antitrust agencies in other jurisdictions.
An online matrimonial services portal in India also filed a complaint in 2012 against Google before the CCI, alleging discriminatory practices related to its AdWords program.
The matter was also raised in India's Parliament the same year, with a minister saying that Google was being investigated under Section 4 of the country's Competition Act which relates to the prohibition of abuse of a dominant position.
"We're disappointed by this development. While we are confident that our products are compliant with competition law in India, we continue to cooperate fully with the Competition Commission of India's extensive and ongoing investigation," Google said in a statement Thursday. "We've not yet received this procedural order, but will review it fully once we have."
Google and its Indian operation are the top two sites in India, according to Web information company Alexa. The one-month rank is calculated using a combination of average daily visitors and page views over the past month. Facebook and Google unit YouTube are in the third and fourth positions, respectively.

Famous Scientist
Svante Arrhenius
Svante August Arrhenius (19 February 1859 – 2 October 1927) was a Swedish scientist, originally a physicist, but often referred to as a chemist, and one of the founders of the science of physical chemistry. He received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1903. The Arrhenius equation, lunar crater Arrhenius and the Arrhenius Labs at Stockholm University are named after him.
Arrhenius was born on February 19, 1859 at Vik (also spelled Wik or Wijk), near Uppsala, Sweden, the son of Svante Gustav and Carolina Thunberg Arrhenius. His father had been a land surveyor for Uppsala University, moving up to a supervisory position. At the age of three, Arrhenius taught himself to read without the encouragement of his parents, and by watching his father's addition of numbers in his account books, became an arithmetical prodigy. In later life, Arrhenius enjoyed using masses of data to discover mathematical relationships and laws.
At age 8, he entered the local cathedral school, starting in the fifth grade, distinguishing himself in physics and mathematics, and graduating as the youngest and most able student in 1876.
Arrhenius next received a travel grant from the Swedish Academy of Sciences, which enabled him to study with Ostwald in Riga (now in Latvia), with Friedrich Kohlrausch in Würzburg, Germany, with Ludwig Boltzmann in Graz, Austria, and with van 't Hoff in Amsterdam.
In 1889 Arrhenius explained the fact that most reactions require added heat energy to proceed by formulating the concept of activation energy, an energy barrier that must be overcome before two molecules will react.

Airtel launches Pocket TV app for Android, iOS version coming soon
|

Airtel Digital TV, the DTH service arm of Bharti Airtel has launched ‘Pocket TV’, a mobile app that enables customers to watch their favorite TV programs while on the move. It claims to serve as a library of video content at an affordable price.
The app promises to offer more than 150 Live TV channels, over 10,000 hours of video content and over 13 channels on anytime TV for an introductory pricing of just Rs 60 per month.
Users can download Airtel Digital TV app from the Google Play Store. It is compatible with all smartphones and tablets that run Android version 2.1 onwards. Airtel has planned to introduce the app on the iOS platform within one month, which will then be followed by other platforms.
Once the app is installed, customers need to activate the service by sending the SMS <ADD TV> to 54325 from their registered mobile number.
In February, Bharti Airtel announced to acquire Mumbai-based Loop Mobile, marking one of the biggest acquisitions in the Indian telecom sector. The deal is speculated to be around Rs 700 crore. As a part of the deal, Airtel will get around 3.2 million Loop subscribers, its retail outlets and about 400-500 cellular towers. Prior to the acquisition, Airtel had 4.1 million subscribers compared to Vodafone’s 6.8 million subscribers. Airtel now has around seven million subscribers, including Loop users. This means, it now becomes the leading telecom subscriber by surpassing Vodafone.

Post Galaxy S5 launch, Samsung reportedly working on affordable LTE phones
|

The dust on Samsung’s Galaxy S5 India launch has barely settled, but we already have news that the company is working at bringing affordable LTE phones to India. According to a report in The Economic Times, Vineet Taneja, Samsung India’s IT and mobiles division head had said that “Samsung’s roll out strategy for LTE phones will depend on the network roll outs by carriers and the scale they can build”.
Taneja reportedly further said that Samsung is looking at a landscape of TDDLTE on 2300 MHz band, 3G on 2100 MHz and 900 MHz bands and FDD LTE on 1800 MHz band. “Before the operators are ready, we will be ready with the road map and products for the market,” he added.
At the auctions held in February, telcos like Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio Infocomm, Vodafone and Idea have bought airwaves in the 900 MHz and 1800 MHz bands. So far, Bharti Airtel is the only company to have launched its 4G services in four circles and LTE voice services in Bangalore.
Samsung has been leading India’s smartphone market, according to the figures by the IDC. The company is believed to have sold over 3.5 crore Galaxy devices in India, so far. However, reports circulating the web have been claiming that Samsung’s growth has been weakened, owing to competition from companies like Sony, LG and Apple. LG has already announced its 4G variant of G2 for India starting at Rs 46,000.
The company recently launched its newest flagship the Galaxy S5 in the Indian market priced between Rs 51,000-53,000.
The S5 has a 5.1-inch screen with a Full HD resolution and an octa-core (eight core) processor which consists of two quad-core processors clocked at 1.9 and 1.3 GHz respectively.
The device comes with 2GB RAM, memory space of 16 GB and a microSD slot that can accept cards up to 128 GB. The Galaxy S5 has a 16 megapixel camera and according to the company, the world’s fastest auto-focus speed (up to 0.3 seconds). It has also has an ‘Advance HDR’ mode for better colours and light.

Tips to make your browser secure
|
|

MUNICH: Web browsers are the key to the internet. Without them the internet is an impenetrable black box.
Browsers may be among the most commonly used applications, but they also offer the greatest number of attack options for dangerous content on the net.To keep viruses, worms and other malware away from your computer when surfing,it's crucial to configure your browser for security.
The firewall on a DSL router is a good first step for protecting the computer during surfing, says Marco Rinne from the computer portal chip.de. But that doesn't hold true if your browser is out of date: “Internet Explorer 6 and 7 or Firefox 2 no longer satisfy current security standards,” he says. For optimal protection, he therefore urgesusers to keep theirbrowsers updated.
There are numeroussecurity tools already present in Firefox and Internet Explorer. The pop-up blocker, for example, prevents more than justannoying ads. It alsothrottles other windows that can be used to sneak malicious software onto PCs. Phishing filters protect personal dataagainst theft.
Firefox offers additional configurationoptions underthe Settings item in the Security tab of the Options dialog box: thisincludes the ability to block risky or forgedwebsites. It's also a good idea to prohibit websites from installing add-ons on their own. Similar settings are possible under Internet Explorer in the Security tab of the Internet Options dialog box, accessible from the Tools menu.
Computer owners should also activate all options for warning against attacks, advises Markus Linnemann, managing director of the Institute for Internet Security (ifis) at the Polytechnic University of Gelsenkirchen in Germany. This applies in particular to warnings about suspicious content to be displayed using ActiveX, Flash, or JavaScript.
